Welcome to BangkokType — a little space where I share my love for the unique and vibrant typography found all across Bangkok.

Exploring the beauty of Bangkok, one sign at a time.

  • Unfortunately, I can’t remember the name or exact location of this greasy spoon — but that’s kind of the charm. Most spots like this in Bangkok are open-air, with ready-cooked dishes lined up out front. The sign is tiny, about the size of a license plate, clearly done on a tight budget. But somehow, it still has its own kind of beauty — simple, raw, and real.

  • Pattavikorn Market is probably the biggest second-hand market in Bangkok — maybe even in all of Thailand. The place is massive, packed with thrift shops and street vendors. This is one of the entrances, and I love the colorful Thai lettering, especially the one painted with the Thai flag. It’s so full of life and really shows how Thai people aren’t shy about using bold, vibrant colors.

  • What a stunning font on this lightbox! Ambassador Optical Shop, located in Ratchathewi — an area full of eyewear stores — stands out with its fun, quirky typography. It’s so playful and well-designed, you don’t even need glasses to notice it.

  • Tae Lao Chin Seng is an old-school Teochew bakery in the heart of Chinatown. The awning sign features only Thai and Chinese, and behind it, you’ll spot a traditional Chinese shophouse-style signboard — just like many classic storefronts in the area.

  • I really love the big, chubby store name mounted directly onto the marble — no base, just handmade bronze English letters standing on their own. The gold color of the sign contrasts beautifully with the natural patterns of the stone, making it a simple but striking storefront.

  • This lightbox outside the Bangkok Fishing Net Company in Sathorn features pretty standard Thai and English typography — maybe even a bit overcrowded for such a small space. But the quirky yellow elephant logo adds a playful touch, making it a fun little piece to spot on the street.

  • This tailor shop’s lightbox might not stand out much during the day, but once it lights up, the green logo really glows. It has a smooth, glassy look that gives the whole sign a clean and stylish feel.

  • Jewelry Mart is located in the heart of Nana — one of Bangkok’s diversities neighborhoods. If you’ve ever been here, you’ll know it’s a melting pot, especially home to South Asian and Middle Eastern communities. No surprise that when I first saw this store sign, I mistook the stylized script for Arabic — a great example of how local design can reflect the area’s cultural mix.

  • I can’t remember exactly where I snapped this photo, but I was instantly drawn to the food stand’s lightbox sign. You’ll find this kind of signage all over Bangkok — and across Thailand, really. It’s simple, common, and yet a perfect reflection of everyday local life. The typography is basic, but it does the job and grabs your hungry stomach.

  • Gypsum Metropolitan Tower is a 26-story office building in Phaya Thai. What catches my eye every time is the logo — a double ‘M’ that’s meant to stand out, but somehow makes the name ‘Gypsum’ almost unrecognizable. Honestly, every time I pass by, I swear I read it as ‘Gypsy Tower’ instead!

  • This is a classic example of beautiful signage in Chinatown. Originally a pharmacy, the building is now home to the well-known Thai restaurant Potong. The gold-painted sign is mounted on a concrete wall, featuring two striking tigers and a globe logo — a stunning piece that carries both visual impact and legacy.

  • Ruan Silpa Furniture, located on the main road of Sukhumvit, features a simple yet visually appealing storefront sign. The black wooden board paired with lemon yellow Thai and English script creates a calm, balanced look. I especially love the Thai typography — clean, well-aligned, and beautifully designed.

    Location:

909-11 Sukhumvit Rd. Khwang Khlongton Nuea, Khet Watthana, Bangkok 10110

  • Leng Stamp Shop sits right on the main road of Charoen Krung, next to the Grand Post Office. The storefront is painted entirely in a striking peacock blue, with a bold red Thai script sign set against a white board — a simple yet eye-catching contrast that really stands out.

  • Tucked away in Phetchaburi Soi 10 is a small watch repair stand with a beautifully hand-painted sign in blue and red. The Thai typography is simple yet full of character.

  • If you ever find yourself in Ratchathewi, especially around the intersection of Thanon Phayathai and Ratchathewi, you’ll definitely spot this beautiful vintage handmade store sign. It looks like it’s straight out of the early 90s, with a charming hand-drawn Thai script in bright orange over a blue background. And yes — the store name is pretty funny too!

  • This hardware shop on Charoen Krung features a bold, yellow container-style signboard that’s hard to miss. The Thai script is strong and sturdy, paired perfectly with the Chinese store name beside it — a striking and balanced combo that really stands out.

  • W. Wattana is tucked away in a small soi in Ratchathewi, featuring a wide wooden signboard with the shop name in Thai script. One of the highlights is the handmade laundry stickers on both doors — simple, charming details that give the place real character.

  • The Thong Lo Goldsmith and Gems shop has a giant store sign that looks like a movie billboard from afar. It features a bold red frame with a white background — not the most subtle combo, but definitely eye-catching. The strong Thai script pairs surprisingly well with the blue English lettering, creating a striking contrast that grabs your attention.

  • This might be one of my favorite shop signs in Bangkok. Tucked away in a small soi in Chinatown, it features a unique red paint bucket mascot — ‘the general’ — originally designed back in the 60s and still proudly standing today. If you ever find yourself strolling through Chinatown, make sure to stop by and salute the general!

  • This hair salon storefront is a mix of all sorts of typography — it looks chaotic at first glance, but there’s a certain balance to it. Thai people have a love for color, and this is a great example of how that love shows up in everyday life.
